Crossing things off the Summer Fun List

About six weeks ago, I posted my annual Summer Fun List. This is the list of things I want to do before the end of summer to make memories and feel like I made the most of the season.

One of the items was to go see Sarah McLachlan in concert. I’m happy to report that this happened as scheduled last night!

I got tickets for her performance at the Mann Center. I keep forgetting that this performance space is so accessible — it’s about 15 minutes from my house, and they get all kinds of acts. Not Taylor Swift and other stadium type ones, but a lot of solid acts (I went to Phish maybe two years ago?), plus they host classical concerts and the like. I once went to a taping of Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me there too.

Anyway, I got four tickets figuring I could convince people to go. So last night my husband, and my two teen boys came along. I think the two boys were among the youngest people there!

The weather was absolutely perfect. The heat of the weekend had broken, and it wasn’t raining, so it was about 72 degrees and not that muggy. We had good seats, and Sarah McLachlan’s voice definitely brought me back to the summer after I graduated from high school and the time I spent listening to the Surfacing CD. So many of the lyrics and melodies are just back there somewhere in my brain. (She played more recent stuff too, of course. But as with many acts who’ve been around for a while, she knew her audience wanted a good number of the “best of” pieces.) She was happy and upbeat — even when a bug flew into her throat and she kept coughing and her back-up singer had to cover a verse at one point! — and her voice (minus the bug situation) sounded as good as it did on a studio album from 29 years ago. And oh my goodness, her arms make me want to do more push-ups. There wasn’t even much traffic getting in and out. So all around, an excellent experience.

Of course, it was Tuesday night — we got home around 11 and I wasn’t in bed until close to midnight. So past my bedtime! But my exception to the “give yourself a bedtime” rule is always if you’re having some sort of big adventure. Summer concerts make summer feel like summer, so I’m glad to have crossed that one off the list.

Now I’m going to have “Building a Mystery” in my head all day….

  1. You aren’t the only one with the “Building a Mystery” ear worm today. We were there last night as well, Her voice is still amazing! Thank you for mentioning the Mann performance on your Summer Fun list.
