Best of Both Worlds podcast: Understanding the mattering instinct with philosopher Rebecca Goldstein

Rebecca Newberger Goldstein podcast

We aim to cover all sorts of topics on Best of Both Worlds, and today’s guest, Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, is our first philosopher. She studies what it means to matter, and why humans instinctually feel pulled to feel like they matter — even to themselves.

Rebecca and Sarah talk all about mattering projects, from parenting and relationships to the pursuit of excellence. Rebecca’s book is called The Mattering Instinct: How Our Deepest Longing Drives Us and Divides Us, and she has a Substack called The Mattering Map.

In the intro, Sarah and I talk about non-fiction reading. Then in the Q&A, a listener asks how Sarah is doing a year after her heart episode and diagnosis.

Please give the episode a listen! If you enjoy the show, please also consider leaving a rating and review wherever you listen to podcasts. Having lots of reviews helps show potential guests that we are worth the time — which is how we can bring great experts to the show. Thank you!
