2026 Time Tracking Challenge, Day 6

I don’t often post on weekends, but the Time Tracking Challenge continues apace. I hope you’ve been finding space for fun amid the have-to-dos.

After hitting publish yesterday, I walked down the hill to the bus stop and waited for the 6-year-old to get off the bus (a few minutes past 4). He and I walked up the hill together, and then got to work on sending thank you emails to people who came to his party. We are half done! Then we read together for the next 15-20 minutes or so, and I decided it was happy hour (5 p.m.) so I opened a craft beer. I sat in the kitchen with various children. My daughter decided to bake snickerdoodles, so I chatted with her while she did that, and a little later my husband walked in with our oldest, who is home from college for the long weekend. He hadn’t really eaten on the 5-hour train ride, so he immediately commenced making himself a pizza. I started cooking for others around 5:45 and we all ate around 6:10 or so to 6:30.

Then the 11-year-old opened his presents including the big one — a phone. Our family rule is that you can get a phone at age 11 with a lot of supervision. Because he got a phone, the 6-year-old inherited his “Gizmo watch” — which can call and text people. I am sure he will get bored with that eventually (all our kids have) but in the meantime I have been getting a lot of calls and messages from that watch!

At 7:00 I went for a walk outside. At 7:30 I tucked myself into my bed with a book and basically read for the next 3 hours. This was interrupted, but it was still nice. However, the bedtime process did not exactly go smoothly without me. I went to see what was going on at 10:30 and found my 6-year-old still awake. I turned out his light and got myself ready for bed. I was asleep around 10:45. I woke at 5:45, but went back to sleep and was drifting up for real between 6:30-7. I read blogs in bed for a few minutes, then got up and got my coffee, and read in the living room (looking at the fancy tree during its last few days!) for about an hour until I finished my book.

At that point people were stirring. I cleaned up the kitchen, made my breakfast, then dealt with getting the little boys ready to go skiing with my husband. I got into my running clothes and ran outside for about 40 minutes (9:20-10). It started snowing during this time so I cut it a little short.

I showered and dressed and then at about 10:35 got in my car and drove in the snow downtown to the art museum. This was my little solo adventure for the weekend, though it was slightly less relaxing given all the Gizmo calls/texts. My goal had to been to find pictures of winter scenes as a way to see the art museum in a new way. But I quickly realized that there are not a lot of paintings of winter! I know some people have painted winter scenes (the Brandywine museum has several) but the Philly art museum did not have much. I mean I guess it makes sense that people don’t want to be out painting in the cold. Winter might be a time for doing portraits. Oh well. I find a few, like a Sisley painting, and one of a glacier in Scandinavia. And I looked out the window at the most fantastic winter scenes of all!

I left at 11:45 (it was a quick trip) and drove home. The snow had really picked up so this was a much slower drive back (30 minutes) but I made it fine. I got my lunch (leftover chili) and worked on a new 1000 piece puzzle of a cozy winter retreat for 45 minutes. Now I am typing this while listening to Mozart. I hope your weekend time tracking is going well!
