outdoors

Are you an outdoors-type family? Maybe not…but all of us could probably stand to get outside a bit more.

In today’s episode of Best of Both Worlds, Sara McCarty, head of Run Wild My Child, shares tactics for getting outdoors together. From toys that will make your backyard more fun to things you can do in the dark, this episode is all about the outdoors for people who don’t plan to do 2-week hiking trips.

In the Q&A we tackle a question of when to buy a Halloween costume for kids…in order to avoid Halloween regret.

Please give the episode a listen! Our Patreon community will be meeting up today at noon, eastern, to discuss all things meal planning. We’d love to have you join us. If you’re reading this after noon, no worries, the meet-up will be recorded.

  1. Yes, I can see that Ms. Sara McCarty made the suggestion to go outdoors at least 1 hour per day. That is fine. But I have a lot that I need to ask Ms. Sara McCarty as well. Many of which are also what you, Ms. Laura Vanderkam and Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger, have asked. It is about -2℃ to -5℃ where I live right now. I wonder how long specifically she will need me to be outside per day at this temperature. Also, if it is -20℃, how long specifically she will need me to be outside per day, and what about -30℃. On the other hand, if where I live gets to 33℃, I also wonder how long specifically she will need me to be outside per day, and what about a temperature that is 38℃. I will need to connect with her on LinkedIn to ask her about it.
When she asked me to get off screens and outdoors, I also wonder if she needs me to be off of screens completely. I also need to know what she thinks of the situation when someone is outdoors while using some form of screens.
In the meantime, yes, Ms. Laura Vanderkam, I did get from the blog post “2.5 hours to current” that you wrote “The Cortlandt Boys”. I thought that you’ve written just 1 novel. Now I found that you’ve written 2 novels. I think you can tell me how many novels in total you wrote and what they are.

  2. Thank you — I loved this episode! I also wanted to share a recommendation of using “snack picnics” as another excuse to get the kiddos outside; we are a big fan of these in my household. Picnics don’t have to involve full meals or happen at certain mealtimes to be fun. Maybe a picnic lunch seems like too much of a production b/c you don’t have sandwich supplies in the fridge, but that doesn’t have to stop your family from enjoying a picnic. It turns out that kids are generally up for eating snacks at any time 🙂 We often throw some fresh fruit, veggie chips, pretzels, etc. into a cooler and just go somewhere beautiful with our picnic blanket on any given afternoon. Bonus points if you grab some seasonal goodies, like apple cider doughnuts, and enjoy them while sitting under some colorful autumn leaves. Music played on one’s phone and some picture books to read with the kiddos enhance the experience also.

    1. @Jessica – snack picnics! Yes – love the idea. Or just doughnuts in general, everyone loves those…
