After getting rained out the last two weekends, here’s hoping there will be kid baseball games this weekend! But Sunday looks like it might rain in the middle of the day too. Hopefully not too much.
Please check out this week’s content! Over at Before Breakfast I interviewed Eli Susman about “micropractices.” The big idea is that even in very small bits of time, you can calm yourself or energize yourself. Indeed, sometimes you get an even bigger benefit from small practices because, well, people are more likely to do them. An hour of meditation sounds nice, but if you won’t meditate for an hour, or you can only do that once every other week or so, that will probably help less than frequent small doses.
In the short episodes of Before Breakfast I talked about how “Your brain is not an alarm clock.” Sometimes my alarm clock isn’t an alarm clock — I set my alarm for the “PM” version of the “AM” time I was supposed to wake up today. Whoops. Everyone still got where they needed to go, so perhaps there is a lesson here. I also talked about how it’s good to “Know how long you can go dark.” If you figure out what is a reasonable response time for the people you need to be most responsive to, you can figure out how long you can be offline.
I also talked about how “You and time are partners.” This idea, from Big Time, is that time can help you accomplish things you can’t on your own.
(If you’ve read Big Time, could you do me a favor? Please tell a friend about it, and/or leave a review wherever you bought the book. It really does help. Thank you!)
Over at Vanderhacks, my Substack newsletter, I wrote about how “You need the sleep you need.” Many of us have a strong sleep set point, and you don’t really save time by ignoring it during the week. You just crash on weekends. Personally, I’d rather be awake to enjoy my weekend! I also wrote about how to “Keep up with circumstantial friends.” Even if life changes, friendships don’t have to disappear.
Behind the paywall I wrote about “9 places to find a little more time this fall” and “Your Q4 road map.” We are going to end the year strong! Please consider a free or paid subscription to get a Vanderhack in your inbox every morning.
Finally, if you haven’t listened to this week’s Best of Both Worlds podcast on “Easy child privilege,” please do. I really enjoyed that one (and we had a great Patreon community meet-up this week as well). Thank you for supporting me and my work.
