Plenty of people want to save money, but frugality often gets a bad reputation. We think of deprivation, and who wants that?
But there are plenty of ways to spend less while living life fully. While acknowledging that frugality looks different for everyone (Sarah and I both lucked out on the timing of our mortgages…) in this week’s episode of Best of Both Worlds we share ideas for deprivation-free frugality. From indulging at the grocery store (vs. going out) to embracing cheap hobbies and the library, there are lots of adventures to be had for less.
Please give the episode a listen!
Also (speaking of frugal!) please consider signing up for my free September Reset Time Tracking Challenge. From Sept 14-20, lots of us will track our time together. You can sign up to receive daily motivational emails here.

I know why all your tshirts get holes in the same place! The shirt gets rubbed between the button on your jeans and your seatbelt whenever you are in the car. Seatbelt material is relatively abrasive and t-shirt fabric is thin and delicate. One solution might be to tuck in your shirt, or try to remember to free your shirt from behind the seatbelt when you snap in.
@Lisa- oooh, fascinating! I can definitely try to remember to tuck in my shirt and see if that helps. But yes, so many of my shirts have those little holes!
Soooooo many shirts I used to wear have this problem! I just retired my almost six-year-old Leslie Ts from MM Lafleur and they are the first that have not done that. I’m not sure if it is because I’m wearing jeans less and not working as much at counters that happen to hit right there or the thicker material.
For the bag, my Cuyana tote has been my daily carry for eight years. I had to repair it this spring due to the corners wearing, but it’s looking great. They have changed them in the past eight years, so I can’t speak to the new ones, but their stuff has held up really well.
@Bri – I’ll have to look into those shirts. I have several Nic and Zoe shirts that are just thicker non-cottony fabric, like shifts, and they don’t get the holes but I would like to be able to wear T-shirt type stuff…
Thank you again for another episode of enjoyable listening. You and Sarah make my commute much more pleasant. I was particularly interested in your recent tip about trying the nicer room in a cheaper hotel vs cheapest room in nice hotel. Will have to try it!
@Sarah K – thank you! And it really does feel like I’m getting away with something. My most recent trip to NYC I stayed at a hotel 2 blocks down from the Ritz – I had a great high floor view of Central Park from my room and paid less than half the entry level price at the Ritz. I love that.
