This was another full summer weekend. On Friday my husband and I went to the Phillies vs. Yankees game because his office was having an event there. It was a lovely night for a beer and a hot dog. Sadly, the Phillies did not really distinguish themselves, and there were a shocking number of Yankees fans at the ballpark. The Phillies would make a mistake and you’d hear a ton of people cheering and it really threw me off! The Yankees got up 1-0, and then late in the game the Phillies had the bases loaded and Kyle Schwarber came up. In the movie version, the designated hitter (and our regular home run slugger!) would hit a grand slam. Alas, this did not happen and the game ended in a 1-0 loss. But, like I said, gorgeous night + beer, hot dog, and baseball, so it wasn’t that bad.
On Saturday I slept in (8:30!) as my little guy had been overnight with his Saturday sitter while we were at the baseball game. I spent the first part of the day doing chores — grocery run, cleaning out my car. Then my husband and I went and test drove a new car. My current vehicle is 15 years old and while it mostly runs well it is also…old. Like the sales guy was telling me about all the stereo options and I’m like…I just run my phone because it doesn’t connect to anything in my current vehicle. I put a deposit down (it won’t be available for at least a few weeks) so this is progress. Then I supervised the 11-year-old and a friend in the pool for a bit. Then I met my friend Jane to run along the trail. We normally run in the morning, and while the day wasn’t boiling hot, running in 84 degree weather is still…slow going. We were kind of suffering through our 3.5 miles or so. But then, because it was the afternoon, we were able to stop at the brewery along the trail for drinks. This definitely makes the run more fun! We hung out for 45 minutes or so there.
In the evening my husband took the older two boys to see The Odyssey — I think they liked it. I took the little boys in the pool and made sure the 11-year-old was completely packed up for sleep-away camp with all his stuff by the door.
I did not sleep in the next morning, because the 11-year-old wanted to get on the road! I woke up at 6:15 and noticed that, despite he and my husband planning to get on the road at 6:30, neither of them was up. So I got them moving and then as I was going upstairs again my husband yelled, “wait can he bring his Kindle to camp?” He was looking at the pile of stuff that the 6-year-old had brought back from his sleepover, not the pile of stuff that I thought was obviously the 11-year-old’s stuff for camp (and no, no electronics anyway). So, it was a good thing I got up I guess so they didn’t leave with the wrong stuff. They were in the car with the right stuff by 6:40 and I went back to bed for an hour.
Then I got up and ran (lovely morning), showered, then took the 6-year-old to a friend’s birthday party at a nearby playground. I love playground parties — low key is good. We came back around noon and I let the 6-year-old watch videos for a while as I read a book for work (it was entertaining so that’s OK!). I wound up reading for about 2 hours. Then we played while my husband (who was back by early afternoon given how early they’d left) went to the gym, and when he came back I drove back to the trail I’d run on the day before to go biking. This was a lovely late afternoon ride — only about 45 minutes but hey. I practiced a speech before/after in the car!
Then my husband and I took the little guy in the pool for 45 minutes, got out, and drove downtown with the 19-year-old. He had requested that we take him to Friday Saturday Sunday, one of Philly’s Michelin-starred restaurants, as a birthday present (his birthday was two months ago, but he wasn’t home then, and it also took a while to get a reservation). I’m always up for a great meal. It makes me very happy that at least two of my children want to eat at fancy restaurants that do not serve chicken tenders or quesadillas. It was nice — a tasting menu with lots of creative little ideas like an oxtail beignet and a black sesame pastry for dessert. Our reservation was also for 8:15 on a Sunday night, which was kind of rough – we didn’t get home from this big meal until 11:15! I like putting something on Sunday night to look forward to but…whoa (I was grateful to my 16- and 14-year-old for babysitting and getting their little brother to bed!).
Now after describing all that food…I present my week of workouts (I’m doing this to hold myself accountable for doing something most days).
Monday: Worked out with my trainer (virtually) from 12:30-1 as usual. I did a short 5 p.m. walk outside too (a great way to start one’s Golden Hours).
Tuesday: An afternoon run outside (2.3 miles) – I’d planned to run on the treadmill, but my 16-year-old was on it when I went up there. After I came back in I did 15 minutes of strength training. I also threw a ball with the 11-year-old for a while.
Wednesday: Late afternoon (4:45) treadmill run (2.0 miles) + 15 minutes strength.
Thursday: Hike with Joy (about an hour) on a nearby trail. I also went for a short evening walk.
Friday: Nothing really. Between a camp show, multiple interviews, and then the Phillies game, I didn’t fit it in. I guess I walked around the parking lot at the ballpark and we somehow managed to park on like the opposite side from our seats…
Saturday: Run with Jane on trail — about 3.5 miles.
Sunday: 3.2 mile run in AM + 45 minute bike ride in the PM.

Well, all I can say is, I need to talk with our forest preserve district about adding a brewery to the walking trails! We have lovely lakefront bluffs that would be perfect for a snack bar.
@Barb – it does make a little exercise far more fun – I was definitely motivated to run knowing a brewery stop was coming up!
Well- we were at the Yankees vs. Phillies game last night. We are lifelong Yankee fans despite our relocation to the Philadelphia area. Old habits die hard. The Phillies slaughtered the Yankees 11-4! We also enjoyed a Philadelphia restaurant that had gotten a fair amount of buzz to celebrate our 30th anniversary Saturday night. We dined at Honeysuckle, which has 2 chefs who were James Beard award semi-finalists this year, Great food and service.
@BethC – glad the Phillies redeemed themselves! And I will have to check out Honeysuckle. We’re hoping to make it to the other Michelin starred philly ones in the next year or so but I know there are a lot of good ones that weren’t starred and I keep trying to eat my way through those Best Of…type lists.
