Friday content round-up

The fancy tree is up! With the lights in the yard as well it is beginning to feel a little festive over here. I think there might be a gigantic Costco trip this weekend for Thanksgiving fare and a little Christmas shopping. My husband and I will go together. That is our idea of a romantic date at the moment.

In the meantime, this week’s content.

Over at Before Breakfast, I interviewed executive coach Maya Gudka about practical steps you can take (this week!) to take your career up a notch. I also suggested that “Planning is like GPS” (a good plan actually makes it possible to reroute when necessary) and that “You don’t always have to go digital.” Even complex lives can often be managed at least partly on paper. I also note that “It’s always morning somewhere.” You can generally do things at the time that works for you (as evidenced by a group of ski lift mechanics I saw enjoying happy hour at 9 a.m. after their overnight shift!)

The Vanderhacks newsletter contained the advice that “You can do a lot in 25 minutes,” and that if you want something, it’s best if you “Don’t just drop hints.” Behind the paywall I had a post on “Find resolutions overwhelming? Try this instead” and advice on how to “Do your happiness homework.” Please consider either a free (3 posts per week) or paid (5 posts per week) subscription. It could be a gift for the holidays!

You could also ask for a membership to the Best of Both Worlds Patreon community. This week we’ve been discussing kid gift ideas and how to keep track of good ideas in general. We’ll gather next Tuesday, 11/26 at noon, eastern, to do some holiday curation. If you join now, you’ll also have access to Sarah’s annual goal setting workshop in December. If you weren’t able to join us in Ft. Lauderdale, or take one of her courses, this is the next best thing.

I’m on the Where Parents Talk podcast this week as well. Thanks for listening!

  1. When is Sarah’s goal setting workshop on patreon? I’m trying to find the date and time but I may just be failing at internet.

    1. @Rachel – looking like Dec 19 at noon. We just set a date so I hadn’t posted anything about it yet, but will publicize that this week!

      1. Oh yay thank you! I guess 12 Eastern is probably a great time for most people, but I would be oh so excited if it ever became 11 EST. Although if I wait a few years I’m sure the 5-6pm time won’t be the family crunch time it currently is, and there’s always a replay. I *still* remember the “planning 2023” one so so fondly.

        1. @Rachel – hope you will join us! Maybe someone else can take the little guys for an hour and you trade off?? I know the time difference is rough – we’re trying to hit a time that our US west coasters also can.

          1. I think about the “trade off” mentality a lot, but right now we just swap watching the (1 year old) twins for watching the 4&6 year old. I’ve found that the easy number of kids to manage alone is one kid less than the number one has… I often find myself saying “3 small kids would be easy! you can do anything with only 3 kids!” So I wonder if you think the same about 4…
