Best of Both Worlds podcast: Unusual hobbies and enjoying life with Cindy Everett

At Best of Both Worlds we talk about loving our careers and our families…but both of us, and our listeners, often love a lot more than that!

In this week’s episode, I interview listener Cindy Everett about her outside-work passions. By day, Cindy is a Chicago-based CFO. She is the mother of two young boys (ages 5 and 3). But she also makes time for two fascinating hobbies: leading architecture tours as a volunteer docent, and co-hosting a WWE-focused podcast with her husband!

We talk about why she enjoys both (you’ll learn some fascinating facts about Chicago architecture in this episode) and how she makes time for them.

Then, in the Q&A we tackle a question about a scenario that is happening a lot more now than in the past. A listener is pondering taking a remote job where she would be several time zones away from headquarters. Does it make sense, and what should she think about?

Please give the episode a listen, and as always we welcome ratings and reviews.

  1. I enjoyed this interview. The Chicago architecture tours are fantastic. It has been a while but I did the boat tour and 2 walking tours. Highly recommend.

  2. I moved across the country during my first parental leave and have continued in the same role mostly remotely for the past 6 years. I work as a lawyer for a large organisation so there is an office in my city but the teams I work with are based in my old city, which is 3hrs ahead. The time difference works great for me as I generally work 6am-3pm, which has been a good fit with young kids – my husband does breakfast and the school run and I do after school and dinner. It’s harder in winter but so nice to be finished mid afternoon during summer! It definitely helped having existing relationships before switching to remote work but agree putting in some time for face to face visits initially is a great idea.

    1. @Amelia – thanks for sharing your experience! We were definitely concerned about her being the only remote employee, but it’s good to hear that people have made it work across time zones.

  3. Really enjoyed this episode. Some great ideas and nice to hear someone who’s doing some interesting hobbies just because they enjoy them.

  4. This was a fun interview! I love Chicago!! I’ve done the FLW tour multiple times. It’s sooo good and easy to get to on the blue line for those staying downtown. The house is a gem and so interesting – there is a tree growing in the middle of the house. I’ve also done the boat architectural tour which is amazing, too! So cool to hear from someone making time for hobbies!
