I was speaking in Grand Rapids, Michigan this week. I have family in the area, and so I elected to stay an extra night so I could see them. My parents came to meet me right after the second talk of the day, and we drove 90 miles up 131 to Cadillac, Michigan to see my 100-year-old grandmother.
I should note that this longevity (doesn’t she look amazing?) is not actually in my genes. Quite the opposite; my mother’s mother died relatively young, and my grandfather married the woman I know as my grandmother before I was born. In any case, I hadn’t seen her in many years, and I hadn’t been able to come to her official century birthday party earlier this summer. I figured now was the time.
We had a nice dinner with her, and then I drove the 90 miles back to Grand Rapids. It was a bit of a long journey after a long day, but I’m so glad we did it, and I even added in some more family social time: I took my parents out for a drink afterwards, and this morning we met my aunt and uncle for breakfast. In life, it’s generally worth it to make the trip.
We’re so glad you made the trip too, Laura. Your grandmother was very happy to see you! And so were we!
She doesn’t look a day over 80! You look really happy — nice picture!
@OMDG – thanks! It was a good night.
It’s almost always a good idea to make that kind of time for family! And I agree, it’s a great picture.
Not to mention, this is definitely a good time of year to make a trip on 131. It gets a bit tricky once the storms start hitting…
