A few midweek musings on little things that make me smile:
I got my hair cut today. I had a $50 gift certificate from the silent auction last spring. I brought it to the register to pay afterwards and the cashier got a puzzled look on her face. Apparently, the card was for $85, even though it said $50. I got a free cut with money left over for next time!
My backyard is a rainbow. I’ve got a gorgeously red Japanese maple right outside my office window. The Bradford Pears are orange and yellow. The evergreens are, naturally, green, as is the grass. The tarp on the pool (covered for winter) is blue. Then we have a lovely block of purple Michaelmas daisies. There are still pink and white roses as well.
I took an absolutely perfect nap this morning. My daughter woke me up at 4 a.m. (not a nice little thing) and I couldn’t get back to sleep. So I got up and wrote an article from 5-7 a.m. I got the kids off to school, did some novel work, then a radio interview, then crashed. I crawled into bed at 11 and popped up at 11:57 — right in time for my daughter to come home for lunch.
Lunch was my mother-in-law’s chicken tortilla soup. Yum.
I keep reading about mug cakes. Apparently there’s a new book out of recipes for “mug cakes,” which are little baked goods you can make in a coffee mug in the microwave. Looking at sample recipes, many seem almost as complicated as making real baked goods, so I’m not sure of the merit of this idea. But I still like it.
The New York Times used the phrase “artisanal parenthood” in an article. I have no idea what that means. I asked for suggestions on Twitter, and they made me laugh, such as “the baby was made in Brooklyn” and “I don’t know, but as long as it’s also locally sourced, I’m all for it.”
Sunday will be a 25-hour day in the parts of the country that observe daylight savings time. The clocks fall back, and we get an extra hour. It will be a 169-hour week! I may go to bed a little later Saturday night and still wake up on time Sunday morning to get a good run in (unless it’s raining). And since it will be light earlier, I won’t have the problem I’ve had recently: It’s pitch black until 7 a.m., which means it’s hard to squeeze in an outdoor AM run before the day needs to start.
(To be sure, the fact that it will get dark at 4:45 p.m. kind of sucks, but we’re focusing on the positive in this post).
What do you plan to do with your extra hour?
Hmm… not sure what I’ll do with it yet. The important thing is that I won’t be in labor, like I was two years ago. (You thought that was 17 hours of labor? Surprise! It was 18! Yay! ?) 😀
I’m trying to think positively about the time change and assume my Thursday after work rollerblade by the bay will be a sunset rollerblade…. but I fear it will just be dark and therefore won’t happen.
Talking with my husband over beers yesterday, I came up with an idea for a blog post I need to write, in defense of status reports. So maybe that’s what I’ll use my extra hour doing. Its always a party here! (But I’m losing most of tomorrow to the kids’ Halloween parades, so I’ll want to do a little work on the weekend to catch up.)
It probably still doesn’t answer the question of what “artisinal parenthood” means, but I found this to be somewhat enlightening (read: hilarious): http://scienceofparenthood.com/school-supplies/
@Eric – that was pretty funny. My pencils were from target and are not sustainable. Oh well. I am not an artisanal parent.
I’m just delighted that daylight savings is this week, and not next week, because otherwise I’d have an extra hour of work.
I wish I could say it was something cool like an extra hour of crafting, but it was just sleep 🙂
We relaxed after a very tense and long Notre Dame-Navy game. We needed that hour to unwind!
