So I’m writing this from my bed where I’ve spent a lot of the past few days. I did make it downtown for my doctor’s visit this morning, though that was a bit of an ordeal. My husband drove me and helped me walk through the building as it was pretty clear I could not move much on my own, let alone drive. The upside is I left with various prescriptions (steroids and for pain) and I am supposed to start physical therapy at a place around here.
(For those wondering, I did make it to the birthday party on Monday. My pinched nerve pain had gotten a little better and then took a turn for the worse later but I was able to go and celebrate with the 9-year-old and many of his friends. This was at a large arcade and as I handed the kids the game cards I gave my little speech multiple times that I was trusting them not to leave the place as we didn’t have enough adults to follow everyone around. More than one kid said to me “but why would we leave? The video games are here!”)
Aside from the pain, life was conspiring to make getting both of us downtown for an 8:30 a.m. visit challenging. The kids were out of school for snow yesterday, and today our district had a 2-hour delay — slightly inconvenient, as they still needed to get to school, just at the wrong time… Remember the minivan is in the shop. I had also gotten an appointment to get my car serviced this morning, which really needed to happen (the oil was getting low) and so I didn’t want to cancel that if at all possible (and as it turned out the battery was on its last legs too and as my son will be driving this car it needs to work).
So I needed all the various layers of coverage we have and then some. But I made it to my appointment, my kids all got to school, and my car got fixed (no word yet on the minivan). Unfortunately, something went wrong with the humidity and the plunging temperatures last night and now the wall paper has peeled off the wall in the dining room. But I will get to that problem when I am up and mobile again. Here’s hoping that is soon!
Wow! That is a lot. Hoping your doctor’s visit put you on the path to recovery + that you’ll be feeling better soon.
@Abby- thank you! Here’s hoping…
Sending you positive recovery wishes. I’m glad you were able to make the birthday party! Thinking of you.
@Amanda – thanks! It has come and gone in waves but at least the birthday party was mostly tolerable.
Yikes! That’s a lot. Hope you start to get pain relief quickly! I was home sick with whatever winter cooties are going around this week and, once the headache and congestion subsided, was able to combine couching with planning to at least make use of the unplanned day off.
Hopefully your unplanned downtime at least allows you to do some planning and working, even though you are more horizontal than expected. Just out of curiosity, how does one log days like this on a time log? I was tempted to put “sick” or “down for the count” for the day and call it good! Hang in there!
@Kristen – I have been doing some work – but I’m also feeling pretty tired/distracted so not too much of the harder sort of work. Oh well. Hopefully I’ll be more productive soon. Glad you are feeling better! I have been putting different things on my log – lie in bed, work in bed, read/relax, depending on what I’m doing…
Hope you feel better soon. So hard to balance all of the moving pieces when you have an unexpected health setback!!
@BethC – yep, the logistics have been something…We shall see how this weekend goes…
Feel better Laura!
@Amanda – thank you!
What an ordeal! So sorry to hear about what you are going through. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
@Joyce – thank you! Folks around me are mostly stepping up – it’s nice!
Praying for a speedy recovery for you.
@Mandy- thank you – I appreciate that. Here’s hoping!
Hope you feel better soon! I had several of those “one step forward, two step back” kind of ordeals this week too. And a car needing an oil change! Life happens, all at once sometimes.
@Amy – yep, all at once – or at least it doesn’t stop just because I’m stopped!
Oh no! I will have to go back and catch up as I didn’t realize you were injured! This too shall pass, although not without some frustration in the meantime. Rest up and I hope you are feeling better soon.
@Lori C – yep, here’s hoping. This has been an incredibly frustrating week! Kids off school today again but at least the upside is that there isn’t as much driving necessary (which I can’t do…)
Laura, I feel so sorry for you, I’ve had very similar problems and the pain is just excruiating. Being immobilized also sucks big time! It always passed at some point for me and I hope that’s in the near future for you.
@Maggie – thank you – it has been excruciating at times. I am hoping I am turning the corner…glad it always passed at some point for you!
I’m so sorry for your back troubles and pain! When I heard about it on a recent BOBW episode, I understood completely as this happened to me last week. (Well, I don’t think it was a pinched nerve, but my back “gives out” every few years. It’s awful.) I also spent more than a few days in bed, my husband was able to work from home thankfully, but it’s awful not being able to get around normally or stand without immense pain. I hope you feel better soon.
@Elissa- thanks and I hope you are feeling better soon too! It does stink not being able to get around normally and do normal things. I know I should be patient and take it easy but my life is not really structured to make that particularly easy to do.
