Friday round-up: Content + slush before the snow

I had planned to run outside yesterday, as the afternoon temperatures hit a balmy 46 degrees. However, I hadn’t quite factored in the slush as several inches of snow were all melting. The roads and trails were very wet. So I wound up running on my treadmill and it was fine. When I do that, I run shorter but faster, and I do some strength training after, so it feels like a total workout. Then I put on my boots and went for a walk in the slush and didn’t worry about the splashing!

Today is supposed to be warm-ish, too, and then things are supposed to drop down to 6 degrees. And then we get our giant snowfall, though we shall see how much. At one point the predictions were like 25 inches. Now it’s more like 14.

Here’s this week’s content:

My Before Breakfast interview this week was with the lovely Erin Port of Simple Purposeful Living. She has a new book out this month called Tiny Tweaks, Happy Life, which is all about small changes that can make life better. Please check that out!

In the short episodes, I covered routines from different angles. For instance, “When do your routines fall apart?” If you know when things tend to go off the rails, that can provide guidance for preventing that or…more likely…reworking a routine to account for the fact that life is what it is. I also raised the question “Are your routines routine?” Sometimes there are enough aberrations in a schedule that what we think is “normal” really isn’t. I’m certainly seeing that it’s going to be the rare week without some appointment of some kind or another. For instance, on Wednesday this week I had to pick up a kid from school after a call from the nurse. I spent the afternoon waiting for a call back from our pediatrician’s office. I brought the kid in for an appointment at 8:45 Thursday. All is fine but it is also…a lot of time. What we think of as a normal daily routine may actually happen 3x a week or less. Good to know!

Over at Vanderhacks, my Substack newsletter, I wrote about “Persistence over perfection.” Many things work if you stick with them, even if they’re not ideal. I wrote “Don’t keep good news to yourself” because sharing positive news builds social capital. Behind the paywall I wrote about how to “Move time around” and recognize that things don’t have to happen at the “normal” time to find a spot in a schedule.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!
