I don’t normally think “thank goodness it’s Friday” — weekends with little kids aren’t exactly relaxing — but, well, it’s been a week. The back-to-school season is always an adjustment. So far everyone has gotten where they are supposed to go at the time they are supposed to be there. I’ll count that as a win.
September can be a challenging month. Schedules are shifting — but that means there is an opportunity for new habits. If you’d like to track your time with lots of other people (1200+ signed up currently!) please consider doing my September Reset. From Sept 8-14 we’ll track time, and alongside that, and for the next few weeks after that, we’ll work through a handful of my favorite time management strategies. I have an “online portal” (built through Google surveys) that will offer people the opportunity to reflect on their schedules and these strategies. Answers will be kept confidential, but might be used in future projects. I view this as a win-win — people get to think and strategize about their schedules, and I get real-life fodder for content. Sign-ups will close on Sunday at some point so please sign up if you’d like to join me.
In the meantime, I have apparently been married for 21 years. The doorbell rang yesterday and there was a delivery person with a dozen roses, so I put those on the table, sent a thank you text to my husband, and then was surprised when, about an hour or two later, the doorbell rang again with another delivery of a dozen roses. That was a real head scratcher, but apparently my husband ordered from one company, then read reviews that they had just not delivered a lot of bouquets so he decided to do a back-up. But they did both come through!
Over at Before Breakfast this week I suggest that people “Talk on Thursday to plan on Friday.” I’m a big fan of doing weekly planning toward the end of the week, but if you need to coordinate plans with people, having a quick chat on Thursday can be very helpful. I also suggest people “Add something to your morning routine.” September is a time of transition (hello September Reset) but with that, it might be possible to add something new and fun to the mornings, even if it’s really quick. You never know!
At Vanderhacks, my Substack newsletter, I talk about how “Everybody likes to finish” — even if it’s not always rational. I share how I’m trying to eat more produce: “Roast some veggies.” And behind the paywall I’m talking about “How to tidy up faster.” Please consider a free or paid subscription — and thank you for supporting me and my work.
It HAS been a week! First week of school (new high schooler and middle schooler) and then you add in lice for me and all three kids…yeah, I’m ready for the weekend haha. Related to your roasting veggies, I’ll put a plug in for the air fryer. It makes roasting veggies easier and quicker. I can have cut up roasted sweet potatoes in 16 min, zucchini in 6-8 min. I also love my olive oil sprayer (from Amazon). Small things can sometimes make it much easier.
@Megan – so sorry about the lice! That is a horrible way to start the school year! Hope it is all taken care of soon. The oil sprayer sounds tempting. I just put olive oil in a bowl and coated the veggies and put them on a baking sheet but the sprayer does seem quicker…
