At least he’s cute…

So, Monday…I was on my own with the kids (husband traveling all day, nanny off). I planned to pick the 5-year-old up at school, which gets out at 3:45 p.m., to take him to his ninja class (4:15). I stopped working at 3:30, went over, and got him without incident. We started driving to class when I got stuck in the worst traffic I have ever seen on one of our local roads.

I mean we inched forward for a solid 30 minutes. This is a back route people sometimes take when I-76 is completely blocked, so I think that was happening, and I later learned that another local “main” road that goes the same direction turned out to be closed. So there were reasons. But still, so frustrating.

The net result was that instead of being early to ninja, we were 25 minutes late for an hour-long class. But hey, he’s still there for it, right? So, as I’m taking him in, my son tells me he doesn’t want to do the class. I ask why, and he tells me “because we’re late.” Yes, seriously. I say it doesn’t matter, they’ll still be happy to have him, but he downright refuses. Like we go in and he keeps trying to run out. I have him sit on my lap to watch but he won’t stay there. So, finally, after 15 minutes I decide to leave. I have the map app reroute around the other road…but we get stuck in another jam and it takes us 35 minutes to get home too (this should be a 15 minute drive).

So 3:30-5:30 p.m. was devoted to a ninja class that never happened. Needless to say, this was a bit frustrating!  But hey, at least he’s cute.

In other news: Are you doing the September Reset? Today’s tip was about planning one big adventure and one little adventure into life each week. We can get so focused on the must-dos that sometimes life begins to feel like we’re in a bit of a rut. Adventures can change that. Last week, my “big adventure” (aside from all the stuff on my work trip, which was fun too) was going apple picking, and my little adventure was going to Chanticleer gardens. The idea is to think about what might be a little different and out-of-the-ordinary. You want to have something to mention if people ask you on Monday what you did over the weekend!

If you are doing the September Reset, I highly recommend clicking through to the Online Portal to do some exercises to figure out how to plan these strategies into your life.

  1. Oh that is so painful to sit in the class and get there late and then have him refuse to do the class since you were late! Definitely a “good thing he’s cute” experience (we have a number of those experiences in our house).
