Best of Both Worlds podcast: Thinking through summer (Top 5 edition)

summer planning podcast

Memorial Day is almost upon us. This upcoming long weekend is the unofficial start to the summer season. So, as we have most years since Best of Both Worlds began, we are bringing you an episode about summer. To shake things up, this year’s version is done in a “Top 5” format:

– 5 ways to celebrate the kickoff of summer
– 5 summer challenges
– 5 things things we want to do
– 5 summer-themed loves of the week

In the Q&A, we discuss the common dilemma of handling that last week of summer before school starts (when camp options are sparse).

Please give the episode a listen, and as always we welcome ratings and reviews.

  1. Unpopular opinion (in Maryland): Rita’s Italian ice is meh. But their frozen custard is excellent. Once I discovered the vanilla-chocolate twist cone (with rainbow sprinkles) and ignored the Italian ice, I stopped being so snarky when people raved about Rita’s!!
(Also, Philly people: water ice?!!?!? Who even came up with that as a name?!!?)

Loved hearing about the summer stuff! I dislike summer weather but have both kids in (the same!!!) camp for most weeks this summer so am looking forward to the relatively calm, predictable, and streamlined schedule!

    1. @KGC – I’m definitely a bigger fan of the custard, but the dairy issues make that problematic. Worth it for my favorite peanut butter chocolate scoop at a real ice cream parlor. Probably not in a water ice.

And congrats on having the kids in the same camp for most weeks. That is a big win from a logistics perspective!

      1. Yeah, I recall the dairy is problematic for you. Your fave hand-dipped ice cream sounds like a great reason to cheat on the ‘no dairy’ rule =)

  2. I think that I’ll write a summary of this episode first, Ms. Laura Vanderkam and Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger. The 5 ways you celebrate the kickoff of summer include: 1) A traditional family dinner right after school ends at the melting pot; 2) Making a summer reading list; 3) Spend some time planning one’s summer activities; 4) Wardrobe revamped for places with definite seasons; and 5). Slightly tweaking one’s work hours. The 5 summer challenges include: 1) The ‘sitters; 2) There’s, like, too much free time and not enough structure; 3) Managing screen time; 4) Getting lower than a certain latitude, and there are places that can have temperatures that are higher than our body temperatures; and 5) Having projects to manage over the summer. Then you went on to discuss the 5 things you want to do and the 5 summer-themed loves of the week.
I do realize that yesterday was Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger’s birthday. I have now given my ratings and written my reviews for the BOBW podcast and the BLP podcast on Apple Podcasts. I did not see my reviews show up in Apple Podcasts right away, though. I also registered for my Apple account outside of the US, so I’m not sure how long it’ll take for my review to become visible. So I took the screenshots of my reviews for both podcasts. And I do hope for a happy birthday for Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger. I’m still pondering whether to write “Happy rising-up-to-the-ARVC-birthday to you” to Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger, though.
