Best of Both Worlds podcast: The Broken Rung, with Lareina Yee

the broken rung

Much has been written about the lack of women in top leadership roles. But the problem starts much earlier. Far fewer women are promoted into the first ranks of management vs. men, which means fewer women will make it higher up on the rungs of the corporate ladder.

In this week’s episode of Best of Both Worlds, I interview Lareina Yee, a senior partner at McKinsey and the co-author of The Broken Rung. While her book talks about some system changes, it also looks at what individual people can do to position themselves as leadership material. From making strategic early career moves to build skills, to choosing early employers who are known for training, there are various things people can try to make their way past the broken rung. Lareina also shares some of her own experiences building her career in consulting while raising multiple kids.

In the Q&A, a listener who has recently been promoted into a big management role asks for advice about working with an administrative assistant for the first time. How can she make sure this partnership is productive, and helps her be more effective?

Please give the episode a listen, and as always we welcome ratings and reviews!
