My Best of Both Worlds co-host, Sarah Hart-Unger, has been going through some serious medical issues over the last few weeks. She’ll be dealing with these challenges for a while.
So in this week’s episode of Best of Both Worlds — recorded during my recent trip to Florida — I mostly interview her about these life updates. What happened, and how is she doing? How is she adjusting as life keeps going? It’s obviously hard to know how everything will play out so soon after a crisis (we recorded this 10 days after the original event), but we wanted to keep everyone updated.
In the Q&A we answer a question from a listener experiencing her own medical crisis, about how to think about plans and goals when the old ones feel out of reach. Please give the episode a listen. If you’d like to share any encouraging messages for Sarah, please leave a comment on her blog. She does read all of these!
Post March 2, I’ve already written comments under “Ep #240: Intentional + Sisterly Planning with Azizi and Malika of the Happier Ladies!”, “Update / Ep #241: Current Challenges”, and “Back at Home & Tiny Wins” over at Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger’s main site theshubox.com. I also noticed that you’re the 1st to comment under BLP Ep #241, Ms. Laura Vanderkam. Here are 4 things that I haven’t written in my previous comments.
1. I suspect that Dr. Sarah Hart-Unger prefer to replace running with another physical exercise for her 10-hour-a-week habit.
2. I would prefer the cartridge in or near the heart to be surgically removed earlier than 2033, but, that must depend on a myriad of factors.
3. I agree that planning makes things happen, and The Event this March is exactly how we can see how important it is to record each BOBW episode ahead of time. Without planning, there will not be a 400th BOBW episode mark that we’re hitting right now.
4. And no, I don’t think there are martyrdom olympics or suckolympics either.
@Yukun – yep, there are no martyrdom or suck olympics. When things are bad they are bad, and there’s no point thinking about someone having it worse or better. I really appreciated Sarah pointing that out.
Listening to this really made emotional. Not only was Sarah so strong and candid, but the genuine affection and empathy in your voice was palpable. I know you sometimes, (unfairly imo), get criticized for being direct and short, but your feelings for Sarah are right on your sleeve here. Thank you both for sharing.
@Jennie – I guess I can be direct 🙂 But yes, it was great to get together and to be able to record this episode — that there is an episode #398!
Great episode. I love that Sarah was willing to share all the details so candidly. As a fellow runner, it’s been hard for me to hear that she won’t be able to run anymore- so I liked when she talked about her previous breaks from running (while trying to conceive) and how she can envision a happy life of yoga/pilates/etc. I also loved your idea that she should get back into music! She used to sing and play violin. It’s a big world out there- lots of options to explore.
@Jenny – there are many options to explore! I think pilates might be happening…
