This pumpkin. It was a full 826 lbs. I don’t think this photo quite captures the glory. At least one other topped 700 lbs. I am enjoying my backyard garden, but I don’t think I will ever pull this off. I kind of wonder what they do with them afterwards…
I know they can sell the seeds for a pretty penny!
@Sarah – really? I sort of assumed people roasted their own from pumpkins they carved at Halloween, but I guess people might want pumpkin seeds pre October, too…
I was thinking more along the lines of selling them to other gardeners to grow more giant pumpkins. I read somewhere that the individual seeds from some of the Guiness Record breaking growables go for hundreds a piece!
I just read about these in the book “The Pumpkin Plan”. If I remember correctly, the seeds are the Atlantic Giant variety. And like 90% of giant pumpkins come from this line of seeds.
@Brian – it’s funny to think that one seed can generate such an increase in solid matter in a growing season. Although having seen some of the thistles that take over my garden when I’m not careful, I guess quick and spectacular growth may not be unique to Atlantic Giant pumpkins…
Wow. I had no idea they could get so big. That’s a lot of pumpkin pie 😉
@ARC – I hope! I have a nagging sense they may just dump all that fecundity…
Thanks, Laura, for all your great posts. In our local lake in Vermont, they have had Pumpkin Regattas in which people race these large pumpkins and gourds, but I guess that has now come to an end:(! That sounds like fun!
@Monica – thanks! I’m not sure I would have imagined such a pumpkin would float!
