Health reform is supposed to make Americans healthier and make health care cost less. Most of us don’t believe Obamacare will do that. But here’s something that might: Instead of a health insurance mandate, how about an exercise mandate?
Oh, it’s not as insane as it sounds. Read my (tongue-in-cheek) column at AOL’s Sphere.

This is great! I shoot for 30 minutes a day and if you prioritize it; it is not that difficult.
For some people they can do a lot of exercise but very little is actually necessary to be healthier. The key is most of us get none.
As someone who has written about mental health, this is an important point with regard to depression. While exercise will not cure severe mental illness, it does wonders for as you say here in this article, mild depression which many people are opting to heavily medicate themselves for ( including and especially women) even though medication is not more effective t han exercise at curing MILD symptoms of say depression or anxiety.
And exercise is very, very beneficial to those who suffer from more serious mental health issues, particularly since most of the modern medicine for mental illness cause pathological levels of obesity and diabetes; this is side affect of the medication, which works for some, though not all and in itself very very expensive (hundreds of dollars a month) and controversial, given psychiatry’s history in the U.S. (think lobotomies and drugs that caused twitching etc.)
Great article I enjoyed it!
